The Motivation Myth: Why Passion Isn’t Enough and What You Really Need
Introduction
You’ve probably heard this before: “Follow your passion, and success will follow.” As someone with more than 400 hours of coaching experience, I’m here to tell you—passion alone isn’t enough. It’s exhilarating and sparks action, but it won’t sustain you in the long haul.
So, let’s explore what really drives success: systems, values, and alignment with your goals.
The Limitations of Passion
Passion ignites the fire; it’s the fuel for action. However, it’s fleeting. Imagine being passionate about an idea, only to realize the marketplace doesn’t share your enthusiasm. This disconnect often leaves people frustrated and directionless. Passion is essential, but it must be coupled with strategic action and clarity of purpose.
Let me share an example. Back in 2016, I was determined to write my books in a month. Fueled by passion, I set ambitious goals. Yet, reality struck—it took a year to complete. What kept me going wasn’t just passion; it was the systems I put in place. I committed to writing on specific days, adapted when my laptop broke by using my phone, and even learned to write with my non-dominant hand when I developed repetitive strain injury. Persistence and structure turned my passion into tangible results.
Understanding Motivation Beyond Passion
What keeps us moving forward when passion fades? This is where motivation comes in—not just the fleeting kind, but sustainable motivation rooted in values and purpose.
Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation
Drawing from theories like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Daniel H. Pink’s Drive, motivation can be broken into intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external) factors. Extrinsic motivators, like rewards or recognition, are powerful but often short-lived. Intrinsic factors—purpose, autonomy, and meaning—have a deeper impact. For me, it’s the combination of ambition and learning. I thrive on challenges that push me to grow and improve my decision-making abilities.
Reflect on this: What truly drives you? Are your actions aligned with your core values and long-term goals?
The Three Pillars of Sustained Success
Success is built on more than motivation. It requires intentionality and structure. Here are three foundational pillars I came with at the beginning of this year to help me stay on track with my goals:
1. Intelligence
Intelligence is your ability to adapt, learn, and refine your approach and behaviours. It’s about observing your environment and making better decisions over time. For instance, while writing my books, I constantly evaluated my process to improve efficiency and productivity. This iterative approach ensures growth and resilience.
2. Routine
Routine is the backbone of consistency. A well-structured routine creates predictability and eliminates decision fatigue. During my book-writing journey, I designated mornings and evenings for focused writing. By removing distractions and sticking to a schedule, I ensured steady progress.
3. Willpower
Willpower is the self-discipline to stick to your commitments, even when passion wanes. It’s the ability to push through discomfort and maintain focus on your goals. Developing willpower requires creating an environment that supports persistence, such as minimizing distractions and fostering accountability.
Creating the Right Environment for Success
Success doesn’t happen by chance; it’s cultivated. This brings us to the concept of SCHEMES:
- Space: Have a dedicated workspace that fosters focus and creativity.
- Cash: Manage your finances to support your goals, ensuring you have the resources needed.
- Help: Seek accountability partners, mentors, or virtual assistants to share the load.
- Equipment: Invest in the tools and resources that enhance efficiency.
- Materials: Equip yourself with the knowledge and information to stay ahead.
- Expertise: Continuously develop your skills and seek guidance from experts.
- Systems: Build processes that streamline your efforts and maintain consistency.
For example, during my consulting projects, I rely heavily on systems like the Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize tasks and delegate effectively. By focusing on what’s important, I avoid burnout and ensure meaningful progress.
Bonus Tip: Commit to A Cause
In moments of doubt, revisit your “why.” What’s driving you to pursue this goal? For me, commitment stems from the belief that my work adds value to others. This mindset keeps me going, even when challenges arise. Remember, success is a journey, not a sprint. Build habits and principles that keep you moving forward.
Conclusion
Passion is the spark, but intelligence, routines, and willpower are the engines that keep you going. Success demands more than excitement—it requires discipline, strategy, and a commitment to your goals. So, ask yourself: What routines or principles can you implement to sustain progress when passion fades?
